COPRA, cocoa, vanilla and tobacco are important to the farmers of Sumkar in Madang, says MP Chris Nangoi.
He allocated K300,000 to the Bargam Cocoa Corporative and the Pristine agent depot at Sumgilbar recently to boost production of agriculture products.
“The Government has decided to focus on agriculture,” he said.
“Agriculture is the country’s renewable sector that can boost economic growth.
“Agriculture offers huge revenue, so harnessing its potential is crucial.
“This means Government is obliged to connecting people, business and markets.
“Growth and development could be sustained and the benefits enjoyed by every person in Sumkar.
“We are encouraging moves to combine management of agriculture developments to contribute meaningfully and equally across the district.
“That is the reason why K1 million was budgeted from the district services improvement programme funds to subsidise the copra price so that families can afford school fees and healthcare.”
There are 31 wards in Sumgilbar local level government (LLG).
Pristine agent depot manager Thadeus Kalik said the agent was currently buying dried copra at K1.05 per kilogram.
“I will recommend an amount of money from the subsidy to be added onto the current price,” he said.
