THE K40 million revamping of Alotau port will give the country’s economy a boost when cruise ships visit Milne Bay, according to PNG Ports Corporation Ltd.

The company and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority are rebuilding the port at the request of Carnival Australia, one of its biggest cruise ship operators.

Work has already begun on the project and when completed would add 290 metres of berthing space making Alotau the country’s biggest port of call for cruise ships.

“PNG Ports recognise the importance of cruise ships to its business and the wider community through trickle-down business opportunities and is keen to continue to provide berth and port facilities that encourage growth in this business,”chief executive officer Stanley Alphonse said.

“The project covers the construction of new berthing dolphin, land mooring dolphin and new deck structure which will be built over the existing deck.

“The development of the infrastructure is in line with the importance PNG Ports place in promoting cruise shipping.

“These services include safe and efficient berthing services, pilotage services, maintaining passenger-friendly facilities and improving security for passengers and vessels.

“The rebuilding of the port infrastructure complements the hydrographical survey that is being conducted by Carnival Australia around the sea in the Trobriand Islands,” he said.

In January this year, PNGPCL released K226,607 (A$102,200) to Carnival Australia for hydrographical surveys to be carried out in the seabed around Kiriwina and Kitrava Islands.

“From the data collected from these studies, navigational charts will be produced to guide cruise ships to safely move in and out of the islands,” Alphonse said.

“This is very commendable since Alotau port is the catalyst for the whole project and will result in significant economic benefit for the region.”
