TWO road construction contracts worth K44 million were awarded by the state to Global Construction Ltd and COVEC PNG Ltd last Thursday for the upgrading of roads in Western Highlands and Central.
The contracts, signed between state representative Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane and the company representatives in Port Moresby will enable the contractors to upgrade the roads that would improve the livelihood of the people along the project sites.
Global will reconstruct the road between Kepamai and Uamai bridge along the Hiritano Highway, Central, while COVEC will upgrade and seal the road between Notre Dam and to Baiyer in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands.
According to Global construction general manager Neil Nakikus, reconstruction commenced on Aug 2 with completion of the project set for next month.
World Bank project director Gariga Gabi said the reconstruction of the 24km stretch of Hiritano Highway was timely and vital to improving the quality of life of the people.
“For more than 15 years, this section of the road has been neglected, leaving no option for the villagers but to use banana boats for transport. The road re-construction project will be a significant improvement on the livelihood of these people,” Gabi said.
COVEC, meanwhile, will begin the upgrading and sealing of the 10.8km road from Notre Dam to Baiyer.
COVEC engineering and development manager Tony Liu said the company was grateful to the state for giving them opportunity to assist in developing the country.
Asian Development Bank project engineer with the Department of Works, Siune Umba, said the ADB supported Mt Hagen road project, costing K20 million.
It has now reached the second phase, of which will take 18 months to complete.
