THE expansion of the Konedobu Kanu Klab was made possible by the Royal Papua Yacht Club (RPYC) last Friday with at timely donation of K50,000.
RPYC commodore Ron Barton said the RPYC was committed to helping its affiliates which include sailing, diving, canoeing, game fishing and its gymnasium with around K400,000 directed for this purpose.
“The Kanu Klab is a worthy organisation affiliated to the RPYC and the amount should help promote the water sport in PNG and, also with the much-needed equipment it needs,” he said.
The RPYC has also allowed scholarships for KKK’s membership and has been very generous in logistics as well.
Konedobu Kanu Klab secretary Lydia Sagati said most of the funds would be directed to buying the OC1 canoes, canoe racks, paddles and other equipment.
KKK president Niel Papenfus said “since the KKK’s inception four years ago, the support from RPYC has been immense and has grown”.
“Funding from RPYC will also go to assist the water sport grow with the purchase of the equipment as well as assisting the other affiliates in Alotau, the Port Moresby Outrigger Canoe and the Gereka Canoe club,” he added.
Neil also said canoeing was not a new sport in PNG.
“It has its traditional origins embedded in PNG and we want to see this develop nationwide as a water sport that all can enjoy,” he said.
