K5m for businesswomen
The National, Wednesday September 18th, 2013
EASTERN Highlands has allocated K5 million for existing and aspiring businesswomen in the province.
Governor Julie Soso handed the first batch of payment to the Alekano Savings and Loans Society (ASLS) last Friday in Goroka.
Youths are also eligible for soft loans from the fund if they want to venture into self-sustainable businesses.
Under the provincial government’s Eastern Highlands Women and Youth Credit Scheme, Soso gave K2.1 million to the loans society headed by chairman Reuben Elijah.
Of that, K1.6 million is to be loaned to women entrepreneurs while K500,000 will be on hold with the society for potential or genuine business-minded, aspiring youths to borrow and run their businesses.
The balance is for the ASLS administration costs.
“I will allocate K800,000 continuously every year for the women until my five-year term expires,” she said.
