WORK is set to begin on a new 100-bed hall of residence for male students at the University of Technology.
The university last week signed a contract with Niugini Building Supplies for the construction of the K9.6 million new hall.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Misty Baloiloi and Niugini Building Supplies managing director John Bori signed the contract.
The two-storey accommodation complex will include a computer laboratory, common lounge and kitchen.
The complex is expected to be completed by September.
The development is part of the university’s response to the government’s directive to tertiary institutions to increase graduate output to 17,000 per year by 2030.
For Unitech, this means increasing graduates by up to 3%.
Unitech has moved to secure student accommodation through partnerships with stakeholders, including churches.
Last month the university signed a lease agreement with the Assemblies of God church to continue using the Okari Campus to accommodate students over the next five years.
The Catholic church has developed a college on the Taraka campus, with a hall of residence that accommodates about
30 male students, with plans by other churches to undertake similar projects.
