KAINANTU Nayo Budzes claimed the Southern Highlands Nines title with a 20-11 win over Wakwak Bulldogs in the rugby league tournament final at Momei Oval in Mendi on Monday.
Kainantu received K15,000 and runners-up Wakwak bagged K10,000.
Tournament coordinator Terence Kapipi told The National yesterday that the event was a success despite few delays in the finals.
“We faced some challenges as we had to complete the tournament by Monday instead of Sunday,” he said.
“But all in all, the tournament was bigger compared with those of previous years.
“The attendance from people all over Highlands and the country was fantastic.
“All games were run smoothly except for a few complaints which caused the delays.
“Kainantu were well deserved winners as they fought hard since day one of the tournament and they made it all the way to the final to claim the first prize.”
Kapipi thanked all the participants, sponsors and the people of Southern Highlands, especially those from Mendi, for their support.
“The support was great from everyone involved which made the event successful,” he said.
“It was good to see locals taking ownership of the event.
“Youths provided security and were helping keep the venue clean.
“The leaders of tribes surrounding Mendi were there to show their support.
“They showed unity and everyone came together.
“Unity and peace was the theme of the tournament and I believe that message relayed among the people all tournament.”
Meanwhile, Kapipi thanked Papua New Guinea Kumuls head coach Michael Marum for attending the tournament.
