CLASSES at an old Marist Brothers’ high school on Kairiru Island, East Sepik, were disrupted this week after locals from the area vandalised water pipes and the main reservoir of the school’s water supply.
Provincial education advisor Joseph Auli said yesterday that classes at St Xavier’s had been suspended for a week and students sent home because of the disruption to the water supply.
He said the school could not afford to keep students in unhygienic conditions, especially when there was no water for cooking, toilets and shower facilities.
Auli said they know why the destruction of supply had taken place and workmen were repairing the broken pipes and the reservoir.
He said classes were expected to resume next week.
The disruption of classes came on Monday night, just two weeks into the term Grade 10 students prepare for the national examinations.
The school is known for its academic excellence.
