DEBUTANT weightlifter Eden Kambi was one of the surprise packages at the Pacific Games by winning bronze in the 75kg division.

The 20-year-old from West New Britain decided to take the code seriously last year when she was identified during the PNG Games.

She said winning bronze was something she could not believe.

Her only regret was that her mother, who had pushed her to take up the game seriously, was not there to see her win the medal. “My mother encouraged me and told me to stick with the code as it would take me somewhere,” she said.

“She told me to discipline myself and to be serious with my training.

“But the sad thing is that she was not there to see some of her words fulfilled.

“I am so proud of this achievement which I hope is the beginning of a lifetime experience.”

She said she was an underdog and unknown among the lifters but her strong performance swayed the crowd behind her.

Kambi said credit must be given to her coaches and management.

“I was privileged for undergoing a one-month training last month at the Oceania Training Institute with nine other lifters. It really helped me a lot,” she said.

Kambi will concentrate on her training for the Commonwealth Championship  in India.
