THE national club championships, hosted by the National Capital District Public Servant Soccer Association (NCDPSSA), kick off tomorrow and end on Sunday with the finals.
As of Tuesday, the first team to arrive in Port Moresby were Mix Mates. The rest of the teams arrive today.
NCDPSSA president Vonnie Kapi Natto said they were excited to host the championships.
“This will be our first time to host the championships and I am looking forward to it,” she said.
“We have disciplined and hardworking local organising committee members who are ready to welcome the eight top clubs when the three-day tournament kicks off.”
Kapi Natto said initially, there were four men’s teams and as many women’s sides set for the tournament but Highlands women champions Guria had pulled out.
She said the tournament would be played at the Bisini Soccer Ground on Friday before being moved to the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium from Saturday.
“We are inviting all soccer followers, including former players, to come along and support your teams competing at the championships,” Kapi Natto said.
“The seven teams participating are the top clubs in the country who have come through the regional qualifiers. But it would be good to field more teams next year to make the tournament more interesting and competitive.”
Teams: Men – Mungkas (Southern), City United (Mamose), Kimbe Bay Mates (New Guinea Islands), Dainka (Highlands); Women – Wantoks (Southern), Prima Power (Mamose), Mix Mates (NGI).
