THE Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) says its president John Kapi Natto is expected to be re-elected when delegates from the governing body’s member associations attend the congress on Saturday.
The congress will be held in Port Moresby, with the delegates expected to arrive in the nation’s capital on Friday.
The congress comprises presidents and general secretaries of the football associations of Port Moresby, National Capital District, Koupa, Tabubil, Mendi, Wabag, Hekari, Lahi, Lae, Wau, New Britain Palm Oil, Kimbe, Bougainville, Manus, Madang, Mt Hagen and Chimbu.
The nomination deadline for the 10 executive membership roles has lapsed with PNGFA’s electoral committee conducting “integrity checks” on all candidates.
Kapi Natto is the “only candidate put forward” for the role as head of the organisation, PNGFA said in a statement yesterday.
Apart from the election of the PNGFA president, the congress will also elect new executive members comprising four vice-presidents representing the four regions, a women football committee member and four ordinary members as per the governing body’s new statutes.
Kapi Natto was elected for the post of PNGFA president in October 2018 after the resignation of former president David Chung.
Since his election, Kapi Natto has overseen improvements in the game with a governance structure.
The final product was the amendments and passing of the new statutes in an extraordinary congress in December.
Kapi Natto revived the national club championship, which Mungkas won last year.
“The centrepiece of his first tenture as PNG Football Association president was the handing over of the lease of the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby to the PNGFA,” the statement said.
“Kapi Natto’s vision to push and bring the game to all corners of the country is slowly but surely taking shape despite the current state of funding constraints.”
