Kapuls selection slammed

A NATIONAL Soccer League franchise owner has labelled last week’s selection of the Papua New Guinea men’s squad as biased with the club now looking to withdraw from the country’s premier football competition.
Morobe Wawens owner Andrew Namuesh said most of squad members were from Lae City and Hekari.
“It is unfair to other franchises that put a lot of effort into helping continue the league,” he said.
“Looking at the squad, most of them are old players who have lost their form.
“From the trials in Port Moresby, I believe the selection of these players is unfair.
“Selectors should look more at upcoming players.
“If we continue to use the same players, PNG will get nowhere.
“In previous years, the same players continued to be selected, so I came up with the idea of establishing Morobe Wawens to challenge the process in selecting the same players.
“But the way I see it, it still hasn’t happened.”
Namuesh said he had established the club in 2014 and then introduced the offseason Wawen Cup tournament using his own resources.
He said his efforts had paid off when the Wawens competed in the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League, of which City and Hekari were regular competitors.
“It shows that my efforts as a person digging out of my own pocket are all a waste,” Namuesh said.
“So where to from here?
“The only thing I can now do is withdraw Wawens from the league.
“If they can select either one or two players from my club, it will make me happy to continue supporting soccer. As a franchise owner, we are withdrawing Wawens from the competition and will not support soccer anymore because of unfair selection.
“I have men who play better football compared with some representative players, so how could they have been overlooked?
“So this year’s Wawens Cup has been cancelled and the team will be withdrawn.
“I simply ask the PNG Football Association, through the league, to reimburse my money from the remaining games that have not been played, so I can sort out my players and release them.”
