Housing and Urbanisation Minister John Kaupa has allocated K50,00 for sports development in his Moresby North East electorate in the National Capital District.
Kaupa made the announcement over the weekend at Unagi Oval in Gordon during the launching of Moresby North East John Kaupa Cup. Kaupa Cup coordinator Jeffery Bomai thanked the minister for supporting the youths in his electorate to stay out of trouble and focus their attention on sports.
Bomai said though the launching was done late during the times of the finals, it was timely that the minister has come on board to relieve some of the pressure the games coordinators have had in regards to delays in the release of prize money.
He clarified that money allocated by the minister was for both the Kaupa Cup rugby league challenge in Bomana and Gordon which would also cover the B-grade divisions in both competitions.
Prizes for the women’s volleyball competition will also be covered by the K50,000, he added.
Bomai said both competitions in Bomana and Gordon have completed their normal rounds as of yesterday and they will have this weekend off.
“We will have this week to get our points together and prepare the final qualifying teams to start the finals in the following weekend on a venue yet to be confirmed,” he said.
“The women’s’ volleyball competitions are already into their knockouts and we are expecting their finals earlier followed by the men’s rugby league finals.”
While launching the Kaupa Cup, the MP aid he would continue to sponsor and support sports development for both men and women in his electorate in the years to come.
After seeing the interest of youths in his electorate, Kaupa promised to increase the prize money next year.
