Kaupa files bid to review decision

 ELECTION petitioner John Kaupa has filed an application in the Supreme Court to review a lower court’s decision that dismissed his case.

The three-man Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Jacinta Murray, Justice Elenas Batari and Justice Joseph Yagi yesterday heard Kaupa’s application.

Kaupa is challenging Moresby North-East MP Labi Amaiu’s victory in the 2012 general election on the grounds of errors and omissions by the Electoral Commission.

Amaiu has asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the application because it failed to comply with court rules.

Batari, on behalf of the other judges, said a decision would be handed next month.

Kaupa, who was a candidate for the North-east electorate in last year’s general election, filed an election petition in the National Court.

Justice Don Sawong later ruled in favour of Amaiu and the Electoral Commission.
