Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa has encouraged people to form associations to receive help from the government.
Kaupa committed K18,000 to the Kukipi Women’s Association (KWA), United Church and an early childhood learning centre in his electorate, K10,000 for KWA, K5000 for Unired Church and the learning centre gets K3000.
Kaupa said associations would attract government assistance.
“I encourage other women at 9-Mile settlement (in Port Moresby) to form an association and have them registered like the KWA. This will make it easier for us to fund your group or community projects. It is my duty as your elected MP to give money out but that will only be given to registered groups,” Kaupa said.
The women had raised their concerns in the proposal and presented it to the MP. Agatha Morea, a member of the association, asked the MP’s office for a community healthcare centre and a vehicle to transport TB and HIV/AIDS patients to and from hospitals.
“We have a lot of cases of TB and HIV here, as a healthcare officer, I feel bad invading the privacy of the patients when I go to them publicly with their medicines, which in many cases have led to discrimination by people who come to know about their health situations,” Morea said.
“They have human rights for respect of privacy by people. I, therefore, want an establishment of a care centre where medication will be administered to prevent stigma and the spread of TB.”
Kaupa assured the women’s group of his support. “I will go through your proposal and look at ways to address the issues that you have raised,” he said.
