A FORMER Correctional Services officer and a community leader from Kaupena, Southern Highlands, has called on the provincial government and the police to do more to curb the smuggling of alcohol and other illegal substances like marijuana into the province.
James Temane said the smuggling of alcohol was increasing, resulting in law and order problems and the authorities were doing little to address the issue.
“Although we have a checkpoint at Kagul Bridge, the smugglers are still bringing alcohol into the province through bribery and other routes leading from Tambul, Western Highlands, and Kandep, Enga,” he said.
“I call on the Southern Highlands provincial government and the police to secure the LNG project from alcohol-related woes.”
He urged the provincial government and the police to beef up security at the Kagul checkpoint.
“I am calling on the governor to look into this matter quickly to secure the LNG project.
“The Christmas period is approaching and the provincial police commander must increase the manpower for proper checking so that the smuggling, which is occurring daily, can be stopped.”
