Kavieng town constructing four-lane road

THE transformation of Kavieng town roads continues with the building of its first ever four-lane road from Kavieng Airport to the court house, formerly known as Stanfield Street, it was renamed Kavavu Avenue in honour of one of New Ireland’s premiers, Demas Kavavu.The New Ireland government said in a statement that road work had started on five other Kavieng town streets, including Tanga Street, Wharf road, Kulangit road, Omo road, Tabar Terrace and Crossing, Sivaro and Lemus Street.“The third phase contract under the Government’s public investment programme (PIP) last year includes the upgrading and sealing of the court house road and Rawal Suburb roads which is nearing completion,” it added.“Under the PIP programme this year, the Works Minister has allocated K4 million to complete phase four.”Provincial Works, Transport and Infrastructure chairman Clement Moson said: “We are transforming New Ireland into a self -reliant, autonomous part of Papua New Guinea. “This Government’s goal is to build all our essential services, including roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, council chambers and other infrastructure to back up the dreams and aspirations of our people, promoting pride.”New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan said a new town market was still a top priority but it was currently tied up because the land it was being built was now a matter in court.
