Kawa is Sogeri High’s dux

DESPITE the loss of his mother, Sogeri National High School dux student James Kawa Junior  walked away with flying colours after winning all the top prizes last month during the school’s 42nd graduation.
Kawa won the entire top prizes from all the subjects studied as well as the citizenship award and impressed all the people, including the parents, who went to witness the graduation.
School principal Benny Rayappan from India said that Kawa needed a very good scholarship to study overseas as he had the potential of making it to some of the top known universities in the world.
“ You need a very good scholarship, I have faith and trust in you that you can take up studies overseas if there are opportunities,” Rayappan said when congratulating Kawa before he drove away with his father after the graduation.
Minister for National Planning and Rural Development Paul Tiensten when applauding young Kawa for his achievement, said that he was impressed and asked him to pursue studies in the petroleum field.
Kawa from a mixed parentage of Koromi village Ialibu, SHP and Henganofi in the EHP came first in Language and Literature, Mathematics A, Chemistry, Physics, Visual Arts and Information Technology which qualified him to walk away with the dux of the school.
“I had an aim in life. I set my goals to become a top student so that I go to university and makes my parents and my benefactors particularly my cousins happy by repaying what they have spent my education,” he said.
It was not the first time Kawa topped the school, he also became the dux of Henganofi Secondary School in Grade 10 and was one of the top five best students in the country in 2008.
He was also one of the top students among all the grade eight students in the Eastern Highlands in his primary examination in 2006.
However, Kawa said that his dream was to become a petroleum engineer but decided to take up mining engineering at the University of Technology in Lae as there is petroleum engineer programmes offered in the country.
His father James Kawa said that he was so proud of his son’s achievements although it was just the beginning of life.
“Credit should go to his committed teachers, his cousins and the Lord for all the blessings”.
