STANFORD Gore Kawale broke a personal best of 56.17 by 1.28 seconds in the men’s 100m freestyle, at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

After his swim, the 17-year-old talked through his race plan, one that clearly worked on this occasion:

“I try to make sure I’m not going out too hard on the first 50 (26.41 over the first 50m) and that I’m giving it all I’ve got on the second 50,” Kawale said.

Kawale, who lives and trains in Australia, has been enjoying the pool at the Palau Sant Jordi arena:

“I train back in Brisbane, outdoors. It’s winter there at the moment so it’s pretty cold! It’s nice to be here in Spain where it’s nice and warm – great pool, great facilities.”

With one race down and another to go, Stanford is looking forward to swimming the 100m butterfly on Friday, saying ‘it’s always nice when you’ve got the first event out of the way’.

Targeting the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics as the next big events to work towards, Stanford seems well on his way achieving his goals.
