Staff of the ophthamology clinic at Nonga General Hospital in Rabaul celebrated World Sight Day in Kokopo yesterday.
The event was the first of its kind in the province.
With the theme ‘Eye care everywhere’, the programme was based on the sight problems common in communities.
Information was disseminated by speakers about the importance of protecting the eyes. Cataract was identified as common among people.
Cataract is clouding of the eye’s natural lens behind the iris and pupil. It is the most common cause of vision loss and the principal cause of blindness in the world.
Sister Carolyn Kaluna said that about 36 million of the world’s population was blind with 124 million living with sight issues and yet to visit eye care clinics for treatment.
