THE Keltiga Community Learning Centre (CLC), located along the remote ridges of Western Highlands, opened its first permanent double classroom on Saturday.
Funded by the Digicel Foundation at a cost of K85,000, the steel pre-fabricated double-classroom includes an office space, toilets and a water tank and will provide much-needed classroom for 40-extra students at the school.
The community initially received a container classroom in 2009 from the foundation to replace the single dilapidated bush-material classroom they were using.
Since then, the Keltiga CLC had doubled in enrolment figures, from 40 pre-school children taught by two teachers to 80 students with three teachers. It continues to grow.
The community put all their efforts to have their community prep and elementary school formally recognised by the provincial education department in 2009 as Keltiga St Theresa Elementary School, which was a tremendous achievement.
Due to their rapid growth and demonstrated community ownership and good governance, the Digicel Foundation funded a single kit structure classroom for the CLC last year.
Last June, Keltiga was recognised as the ‘CLC of the Year’ and invested their prize money of K10,000 in building another permanent classroom.
With its completion, the school has three permanent classrooms and a container classroom catering for Prep, E1 and E2 classes.
Over the past two years the Keltiga community has grown from strength to strength, mirroring strong community ownership, good governance and financial accountability in accordance with Digicel Foundation’s Community Learning Centre (CLC) sustainability model.
