The programme was funded by the PNG Correctional Service at a cost of K137, 000 and was facilitated by the Vunamami Farmers Training Centre (VFTC).
Total of 130 graduates received their certificates in various trades and from that group 99 were detainees and 31 officers.
Trades taken were hospitality and tourism, garment production, agriculture, auto mechanic, carpentry, plumbing, spray painting, panel beating and welding.
During the graduation ceremony the PNG Correctional Service (PNGCS) deputy commissioner-operations Dennis Piandi told the graduates the TVET programme was one of the many activities under the correctional service prison industry policy that was approved by the Government on the Nov 25, 2014 through a National Executive Council decision.
Piandi said the policy was in line with the functional role of the PNGCS as specified under Section 7 of the CS Act 1995.
“Its key objective is to provide a framework for future rehabilitation programmes for detainees that enhance their re-entry into the society as reformed citizens with appropriate livelihood skills and orderly mindsets,” Piandi said.
