Kickboxer Samson eyes fights in Australia

PAPUA New Guinea kickboxer Nelson Samson is following the opening of Australia’s borders with great interest.
Like many other elite sportsmen and women who travel overseas for higher level competition, the border restrictions since 2019 when the Coronavirus pandemic hit, has made it difficult for everyone.
But Samson is glad there is some activity in terms of borders opening up, particularly those of Australia, from where he gets most of his invitations to fight.
The 33-year-old, from Southern Highlands and Enga, had been invited for a number of professional fights in Australia over the past two years, but he was unable to travel.
The next fight is in Sydney in late March and Samson is busy raising funds to pay for his airline ticket and to cover other necessary expenses.
A very humble, disciplined young man, Samson is hoping that these attributes will attract potential sponsors who are willing to re-boot his kickboxing career.
“If anyone out there, whether a huge company or a small small-to-medium enterprise that wants to share their blessings by way of donations, I will forever be grateful to them,” he said.
“My team and I are appealing to any good people out there, who will be acknowledged for their timely support.”
Samson said if the sponsors wanted leverage from their financial support, there was an experienced team supporting him that would ensure they got maximum value.
Expenses to be covered include Australian visa fees, airline tickets, accommodation and meals.
Samson can be contacted on 70 171 051 or 73 334 390 for more information.
He has been improving his fight records in the past five years and is starting to get noticed for his ability to be competitive in Australia.
Samson said promoters did not just invite anybody.
He said they had to be convinced that invited fighters could hold their own against an opponent of similar standard or even better.
It took some time but Samson is glad the experience gained now puts him in good stead to win more of professional fights.
A couple of invitations have either been on an undercard or main supporting bout because he fights as a Papua New Guinean.
Others involved in these fight nights are mostly Australians.
However, they can fight under the flag of one of their parents, whose origins are from another country.
