THE PNG Kickboxing Association will stage its 12th national kickboxing championships on March 8-9 in Port Moresby.
PNGKA national coordinator Micah Oki, who recently returned to Port Moresby from the highlands region developing the code in Southern Highlands, Hela, Jiwaka, Chimbu and Goroka, said the national titles was also scheduled to coincide with the official launching of a movie project in PNG by B-Team PNG.
Micah said kickboxing had seen a slumpafter champion Stanley Nandex’s retirement but PNGKA had focused on developing talent through clubs and schools.
He said discussions with B-Team PNG would result in having the movie’s stars as a special guests for the event.
Micah said the event would be part of the preparation for the World Championships in Croatia on July 16-21 and the PNG Games in November.
PNGKA vice-president Paul Kiripe said the date was convenient to allow fans to have an opportunity to meet the B-Team stars because the the launch night would only be limited to corporate companies and investors to meet them at the Gateway Hotel.
“We want to give as many fans a chance to meet the stars especially actors, Michael Jai White, Don Wilson and Cynthia Rothrock during the championships,” Kiripe said.
The national titles will now allow different rules and disciplines such as, kickboxing, K-I, MMA, full contact, semi-contact, MuayThai and other forms.
The championship will be sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) which PNGKBA.
Micah added that the calendar for 2012 would be released after the PNGKA annual general meeting.
