Remote Kikori district in Gulf is focusing on transportation and communications for effective and efficient service delivery, says MP Soroi Eoe.
He said K7 million from the district services improvement programme (DSIP) funds had been earmarked as seed funding for the construction of roads, jetties, wharves and communications towers.
Government will provide counterpart funding for the projects.
Eoe was speaking in Port Moresby recently when he presented K1 million to Kikori District Hospital.
“We want to revitalise the development and service delivery mechanism in the district through, firstly, improving our transport and communication infrastructure,” he said.
“Only then will the flow of other services come into play.
“I am glad that the Government will be giving me major funding for these projects in the district
“My district is the host to the second LNG project – the Papua LNG – which has a total of 17 trillion cubic feet (tcf).
“We also have the multi-billion kina Ihu special economic zone project.
“It is only proper that before these projects come to shape, we have linkages through transport and communications.
“The plans are to put in communications towers at Ihu, Baimuru and Kikori stations.
“We will also have jetties built in those three locations.
“The Works Department has proposed to build a Kikori-Kerema road, with Highlands (Erave, Southern Highlands) to Gulf (Kikori) road now in existence.
“The Government has approved my proposal for jetties, in particular the one at Ihu station, to be the connection point to Port Moresby.
“Our friends from the Highlands can bring their garden produce to Port Moresby via the road link and board the boats at Ihu to Port Moresby.”
