Killed over attempted rape

Main Stories

A FATHER who allegedly killed a man for attempting to rape his daughter has been remanded at Bomana Prison after his first court appearance.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Paul Nii arraigned Thomas Moko, 46, of Paka village, Koroba-Kopiago in Hela for murder after he was alleged to have hacked to death Jessie Aukelya with a bush knife at Mt Eriama outside Port Moresby last Thursday.
Moko and his family normally gardened at the hill next to Mt Eriama near the Pacific Adventist University.
It was alleged that on the date, Moko’s daughter was gardening by herself.
While she was there, an unknown man who was later identified as Aukleya approached her and attempted to rape her.
He grabbed the woman and they started to wrestle.
She shrugged him off and escaped to their residence at the Bushwara settlement at 9-Mile.
She reported the incident to her father (Moko) and he mobilised his relatives and they rushed back to the garden.
Aukleya was hunting when he tried to rape the woman so after the incident, he continued on hunting without being aware that Moko and his relatives were pursuing him.
He was in shock when he encountered Moko and his relatives, who then chased him down the mountain until they caught him.
Moko is alleged to have cut Aukleya on his right leg, almost severing it.
Aukleya was then beaten by Moko and his relatives with sticks and other weapons.
After realising that Aukelya was close to death.
He went to find a car to take him to the hospital and managed to stop a police patrol unit and directed them to the scene of the attack where they found Aukleya already dead, apparently from loss of blood.
Homicide detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division were notified and they interviewed Moko’s daughter.
She told them of her encounter with Aukleya and that her father had retaliated as a result of that incident.
Moko was later detained and charged with murder.
The matter was adjourned to Aug 30 for mention.

  • I am from Wosera in East Sepik Province and does not connect to Thomas Moko of Paka village in Koroba Lake Kopiago in Hela Province in any way. I am a father of two daughters growing up into fine young women. It is a father’s nightmare to go through a rape scenario of his lovely daughters, how the distraught father feels will live with him to the grave.
Thomas Moko is a real father and protected his daughter and I am proud of you, not all fathers in same situations have done it, you are an hero.
No daughter of an esteemed father will be a toy for brain dead low life stud. There probably will be no penalty if you rape your own sister or mother, not so with Thomas Moko or Rony Naigu.
Magistrate Paul Nii should read the law well enough to set Thomas free…Thomas thankyou, you did well.

  • What would be the outcome if the deceased raped the girl and even murdered her and escaped??

  • Fathers have all the right to protect their daughters. The law must support fathers who protect their families. Criminals, rapist, murderers and child abusers are the ones that need to be punished and not people protecting themselves and their families from harm.
The Law is not blind as judges and lawyers are not blind. The law has eyes, ears, brains and knowledge to make the right decisions.

  • Agree with Rony Naigu.
    Thomas Moko is a hero.
Be a hero to your family first and foremost.

  • The law as it is is very biased. When someone tries to rape someone’s daughter, the same law asks the parents to be responsible and look after and protect their children. And then the same law, again charges a father for murder when all he did was to protect his daughter from an animalistic brain disguised in human. What would have happened like what mero dikana mentioned, if the if the attempted rapist actually raped the girl and escaped????

  • Two wrongs cannot make right. Should have captured the him and hand over to police rather than taking his life.

  • Thomas Moko, you did a fine job, but taking some one’s life is no guaranteed as the law of this country is concern, you should mobilised your brothers or relatives as you have done and take this rapist or the culprit to the police station and the law will deal with him..

  • Moko did what was right at that time. He may have cooled off a bit if for some reason he did not connect with the attempted rapist while looking for him. The judges must give him a lesser penalty under the circumstances. In any case, a life has been taken!

  • I will do exactly what Thomas Moko did in defence of my daughter or any member of my family.
The culprit got what he deserved.

  • Guys you are okay in supporting the father but the headline says, killed over attempted rape.

So why taking law into your own hands??

The law will be fair I think…

  • Yes, by all means we can protect our daughters! but the physical force we use against anyone such as this, will be weighed out in court. Going to the extent of killing the suspect here is another thing., and the attempt rape here is another thing, so samtin blo kot nau!

  • The father did what he had to. I would have done the same if someone touched my daughter.
