POLICE in East Sepik have arrested 50 people following the recent killings of two people in the Kanduwanum area in Angoram.
Police Commander Supt Albert Beli said the clash and killings stemmed from a conflict between two brothers at Kanduwanum.
Speaking from Wewak yesterday, he said: “A man killed his brother’s cat.
“The brother who is the cat owner got angry and killed his brother and went into hiding with his wife.
“Others from the village took sides and fought among themselves which resulted in two deaths and several others injured.
“The mobile squad went to Kanduwanum village and arrested 50 people today (yesterday) since none of them wanted to talk.
“They are all being taken down to the station in Wewak and will be charged for their part in the fighting.”
In a separate incident, Supt Beli said police were looking into the death of a man who died from loss of blood in Wewak two weeks ago.
Police identified the deceased as Richard Allan Bisu from Dagua, Wewak.
According to information provided by police, the deceased allegedly went to the Wewak Police Station in town to collect his mobile phone from some officers.
It was alleged that while at the station, policemen also searched his pockets and found marijuana rolled into three packets and two bullets.
Supt Beli said the deceased tried to escape by jumping through an open window.
“In the process of escaping through the window, he landed on the cement outside and injured himself with a knife he was carrying, it was tucked in his back,” he said.
“The deceased was taken to the hospital but died from loss of blood.
“It is now a case for the corona and police are calling for more witnesses to come forward with statements.”
