FINAL preparations are being made this week in Kimbe for the PNG Air National Athletics Championships which start on Friday afternoon at the Sasindran Muthuvel Stadium.
Six teams have already submitted their final entries with the hosts West New Britain (100-plus athletes) and NCD (50) being the two largest teams.
Teams from East New Britain, New Ireland, Bulolo and Chimbu will take the number of athletes well over 200 with a number of other teams still trying to secure funds to make the trip.
“The current adverse financial climate is not making things easy for those provinces who are depending on support from their respective provincial administrations,” Athletics Papua New Guinea said in a statement yesterday.
“Disruption to the normal passenger shipping schedules is another challenge for teams and about half of the Bulolo team left Lae last Friday to be on time.
“It is understood that there will be representation at the championships from Madang, Lae, Eastern Highlands, Bouganville, Jiwaka, Manus and East Sepik though the number of participants is yet to be confirmed.”
