NATIONAL women’s va’a (canoeing) team skipper Ailima Kini has been named as Team Papua New Guinea’s flag bearer to the Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games which begin with the opening ceremony tomorrow.
“Ailima’s outstanding leadership has been key to the vaá women’s success,” Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee president Sir John Dawanicura said.
“Ailima was part of the women’s team to the 2013 Pacific Mini Games that won three silver medals, and the 2015 Pacific Games V12 team that shocked champions Tahiti for gold.
“In 2019, they added another silver and bronze (during the 2019 Pacific Games).
“Since being appointed as skipper in 2015, Kini continues to show outstanding leadership.
“Being the Team PNG flag bearer is an honour and unique responsibility that places you in an elite and distinguished class with those who carried the flag and its responsibilities before you.”
Team PNG chef de mission Kila Dick congratulated the Central native.
“Being a flag bearer is a significant achievement and is a true reflection of Ailima’s character, which is worthy of this recognition,” he said of the Kalo villager.
Kini said she was honoured about her appointment.
“It (va’a) is a sport I hold close to my heart,” the 36-year-old said.
“Let’s push forward and go for gold.”
Paddling is a daily part of her life in the village.
Kini entered a village canoeing competition, which was part of a Christmas programme in 2012, paddling on a dug-out canoe with no outrigger. The idea of joining the sport of va’a came out of that programme.
Kini has been paddling since 2012 and is the captain of her club.
In 2015, she was named the captain of the women’s va’a team.
Meanwhile, va’a team manager Diavabu Boge Morea thanked the committee and Sir John for the honour.
“We have won competitions and medals, but to be recognised in this manner is a milestone.”
