WESTERN is gearing up for the Southern Region Zone games later this month.

On Sunday, Kiunga Rugby League hosted the first of three matches between the Tabubil Diggers and the Kiunga Catfish at the Kiunga rugby oval to select a team to represent the province.

Both teams had to sweat under the scorching Kiunga sun, with the Catfish coming out victors 24-10.

With home ground advantage, the Catfish outplayed the Diggers in the first half, going to the break with a 20-0 lead.

The Tabubil Diggers came back in the second half, narrowing the margin to 10 points.

But the Catfish held on until the dying minutes when they scored an unconverted try to seal the win.

Man of the match went to Kiunga Catfish captain and hooker Yanon John.

Tabubil Rugby League will host the second match in Tabubil on Sunday.

Kiunga Catfish will have to travel the 137-kilometre Kiunga-Tabubil Highway to play against the Diggers, who will field a strong team in a bid to level the series 1-1.

If so, a decider will be held in Kiunga.

The Southern Region Zone games will be staged in Port Moresby, starting on July 29.
