TRADE, Industry and Commerce Vice-Minister Ronnie Knight is back as trainer of Manus boxer Jason Hayeu.
Knight confirmed this after Hayeu was knocked out in the ninth round by Filipino Dado Cabintoy for the World Professional Boxing Federation bantamweight title in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Knight, the Manus parliamentarian, said as Hayeu’s original trainer and promoter of the 22-year-old pugilist from Lorengau he would make time to train the boxer.
“My hands are full with political duties, but I realised that Jason (Hayeu) needs me in training and at ringside as the person in charge of his career,” he said.
“I’m making a comeback and will train Hayeu for a possible rematch against Cabintoy in Port Moresby but that is up to the PNG Boxing Federation.”
Knight said Hayeu fought well from rounds one to eight but was stopped in round nine by Cabintoy who had concentrated on body shots.
An exhausted Hayeu was floored with a left to the body. But Knight was impressed with Hayeu’s performance.
He was disappointed with the poor lighting at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex but said there was no excuse as Cabintoy used his experience to work on Hayeu’s body.
