ALL human beings are born with equal rights and freedoms.
Human rights are based on dignity, equality and mutual respect – regardless of one’s nationality, religion or beliefs.
There are five universal declaration of human rights – right to equality; freedom from discrimination; right to life, liberty, personal security, freedom from Slavery and Freedom from Torture and degrading treatment.
Laws exist in PNG to protect people but the message needs to get out that they should be aware of their rights and obligations.
Where there is human rights, there is obligation.
It is interesting that most of the human rights cases filed in court nationwide are against the state and its officers.
There are police brutality cases, prisoners complaining about their sentences and treatments and cases of people mistreating each other.
While we are entitled to our human rights, we should respect the human rights of others.
