NIMAI Kobla scored a second-half try to help Tagua Blacks edge 5-Mile Wreckers in round six of the ID24 National Capital District Eastern Highlands Offseason Rugby League competition on Sunday.
The A-Grade fixture got off to slow start at the Taurama Barracks Oval as both teams struggled to find their feet.
Two minutes before half-time, 5-Mile Wreckers forward John Wawa opened the scoring when he converted a penalty following a high tackle by the Blacks.
Blacks’ Kua Paul had an opportunity to level the scores with a penalty of their own before halftime, but his attempt was unsuccessful.
The second half was a tight contest with both sides looking to bring the match down to the wire.
But after regrouping at halftime, the Blacks put on a well-executed play to send centra Kobla over for the unconverted try.
Blacks head coach Samson Aba said despite joining the competition late due to financial constraints, his side were starting to find their feet in attack.
“Despite the situation, we managed to settle our affiliation fees late and started playing,” Aba said.
“Although many of our players did not turn up for training due to the festive season, we played quality footy and came away with the win.
“After having a good rest during the festive period and recording a win at the resumption of the competition is really pleasing.
“We are passionate about playing rugby league because through sports, we can unite with people from all walks of life.”
He said sports also helped keep peace in communities.
