Koboni fail to halt slide

Sports

Concept Koboni have lost three games since the start of Port Moresby AFL Premiership season three weeks ago.
The reigning premiers began on the wrong foot, losing to an elusive young Cats outfit by 18 points in the season opener and then to their premiership victims Lamana Dockers by four points in the second match.
The Demons were expected to break the egg with their new uniforms and put themselves on the points table tally but victory once again eluded them.
Their conquerors Maritime West Eagles were far too superior in their fitness and ball-handling skills throughout the match as the Demons found themselves gasping to another down-hearted 7.4 (46) to 10.7(67) defeat.
The Demons began strongly booting 3.2 to Eagles 1.2 to take an early 12-point lead at the first break.
The Eagles came back strongly in the second quarter, dominating the game from the centre square for a five-goal haul to the Demon’s lone six-pointer.
At the end of the second quarter, the Eagles surpassed the Demons to lead by 6.3 (39) to 4.2 (26) at halftime. The third quarter was an even battle with both sides winning their fair share of possession.
But the Demons had the upper hand with 2.2 while the Eagles notched 1.1 to still hang on to a 7.4 (46) to 6.4 (40) lead at the third break.
It was still anybody’s game when play seesawed in the first part of the final quarter before Mackenzie Maido nailed three goals to claim another victory for Eagles 10.7 (67) to 7.4 (46).
Goal kickers for the Eagles were Maido (three), Jeffery Namete (one), Kila Rawali (one), Greg Ekari (one), Clyde Pulah (one), Jeremy Kase (one), Eddie Meli (one) and John James Lavai (one).
Goal kickers for Koboni were Amua Pirika (two), Douglas Lai Jr (two), Moku Manu (one), Alphonse Jambarufo (one) and Philip Mathew (one).
Standouts for West were John Lavai, Ekari, Kila Rawali and Pulah while Manu, Paul Philip, Brendan Beno and Lai Jr stood out for Koboni.
In other matches over the weekend, Cats clawed Gerehu Magpies 10.10 (70) to 4.2 (26) while Lamana Dockers reigned supreme over Gordon Kokofas 8.10 (58) to 4.2 (26).
