Koboni to get stiff test from Bomana Cats in city AFL

KOBONI coach Overa Gibson will make some tough calls when they take on the Bomana Cats in Sunday’s Esiloan AFL clash at the Colts Oval in Port Moresby.
The devils are coming off a 14-goal rout of Gereka Bombers last week but face a tougher challenge against the in-form Cats.
The Cats boast some of the city’s best footballers in Kataha Seewee, Kelly Kaugla, John Susuve and Peter Lavong, who have been impressive in their recent string of wins.
Even without the services of former stars Gilmore Morehari (study commitments) and Jackson Nawi (attachment with a club in Melbourne), the Cats have enough depth in Emmanuel Michael, Norman Ausapa, Phillipus Gilliab and Apivan Hames.
On the other hand, Koboni boast of PNG Mosquitoes’ Paul Philip, Brendan Beno, Alphonse Jambarufo, Michael Macca and young Douglas Lai Jr, who won back-to-back International Cup titles in Melbourne last year.
They also have support from Nason Benjamin, Bruno Arnold, Francis Brown, Andrew Lai, Lailai Ila Jr, Herald Kali and Haksy Ehava to turn the tide in their favour.
The Cats, however, are elusive ball handlers and with prolific ball winner Kelly Kaugla dominating the midfield, Koboni could find themselves in stormy waters.
This is where Gibson will be pushing for options to squeeze in players who can match the Cats.
In the earlier match on Sunday, Amua Pirika’s Bombers face a tough challenge against ladder leaders West Eagles who will be aiming for another big win.
The Bombers matched Koboni in midfield for the best part of the game last week but failed to work the ball up to the front to convert into points.
If they haven’t fully recovered from that psychological blow, they may be detonated again.
In Saturday’s earlier match, the struggling Gerehu Magpies will have a lot on their plate trying to match the might of the reigning premiers Lamana Dockers who returned to the winners’ circle last week at the expense of the North Waigani Tigers.
In the main match on Saturday, the Tigers, who showed some good form last week against the Dockers, should give the Gordon Kokofas a good run for their money.
