THE Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) says part of the Kokoda Track is now open to domestic tourists or locals for short trekking adventures.
It is open from Owers’ Corner to Ofi Creek, the authority said.
However, trekkers can choose which sites to visit within these specific points.
Trekking time to and from Owers’ Corner to Ofi Creek is two days; Ioribaiwa takes two days, Imita Ridge takes eight hours, Good Water Campsite takes six hours and Goldie River takes two hours.
This is the first phase of re-opening the entire Kokoda Track to tourists, expected in the coming months.
Short trekking is open to individuals, families, corporate workers, Government staff, sporting teams and those who want to go for team bonding, picnics or day trips to experience life on the Kokoda Track.
Trekkers can experience overnight stays at authority-approved campsites and guest houses on the track by paying just K20 per person per night and children under 10 years are free.
All authority-approved Kokoda tour operators must be registered with PNG Investment Promotion Authority and hold appropriate insurance.
They are also required to obtain trekking permits for their clients through the authority office before taking any trekkers. Processing time of trekking permits is within hours provided all particulars in the application form are met.
The permit can be picked up at Kokoda Track Authority office in Port Moresby or via email.
The cost for a short trek is K35 per person and all trekkers must go through a registered tour operator.
Payments can be paid directly to KTA’s bank account and attach bank receipt to application forms submitted to the authority.
No cash payment are accepted at Owers’ Corner.
There will be KTA rangers stationed at the Owers’ Corner Ranger Station checkpoint to ensure all KTA safety measures are adhered to as per the “Niupela Pasin” guide.
