THE acting police station commander in Kokopo was convicted of possessing homebrew and fined K2500.

The Kokopo District Court handed down its decision on Inspector Edward Gigi on Feb 19.

He was charged with being in possession of homebrew in June last year.

The court heard that Gigi during that time tried to enter a pokies outlet in Kokopo town with a bottle of homebrew tacked on his socks.

When the security men searched him, they found the bottle of homebrew. The matter was reported to police.

Magistrate Albert Daniels convicted Gigi and fined him K2500 and failure to pay would see him sent to jail for six months.

Acting provincial police commander Chief Insp Peter Kusup commended the decision, saying no one was above the law.

“It is unbecoming of police officers to have homebrew in their possession knowing very well that it is wrong,” he said.
