EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra says a technical college will be set up in Jiwaka’s Minj.
“It will be the province’s first college,” he said.
Kombra announced the setting up of the college last Friday at the launch of the Jiwaka Technical College (JTC) project steering committee in Banz. “Registration for JTC had started,” he said.
“Positions have been approved and we are now looking forward to the enrolment of the first students.
“By term 3, we want to see one course running, let us say, a soft course like IT (information technology).”
Kombra said teaching positions at Minj Tvet (Tombil site) had been abolished and upgraded to technical college level.
“This (Minj Tvet) is the last one.
“We will not convert any other vocational schools.
“Vocational schools play an important role in nation-building and so they must remain as they are.”
Kombra said the Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Department and the Education Department were working together to ensure the committee got all the support and expertise it needed.
“Committee members must work like volunteers as it requires team work,” he added.
He said the JTC project fulfilled the commitment made by Prime Minister James Marape last
year when he visited the province for the provincial headquarters ground-breaking ceremony in Kurumul.
