EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra says it is unfortunate that some education facilities have been destroyed in some parts of the country as a result of the General Election 2022 (GE22) violence.
“The facilities in place will be used now and in the future,” he said.
“We have reports of education facilities being burnt to the ground and we are not happy.”
Kombra said the department was aware that some education facilities had been burnt in some parts of the Highlands region and New Guinea Islands region.
Meanwhile, the Enga education board is yet to make a decision on the next step to help teachers and students of the affected schools.
“The provincial education board (PEB) will investigate and make appropriate decisions after all the tensions have gone down,” provincial education adviser Lowatina Was said on Wednesday.
He said due to violence, there was chaos leading to teachers and students fleeing for their lives and many had gone into hiding since two schools were set on fire recently.
“Porgera Secondary School, only one duplex house for teachers has been burnt down, while Yumbilyam High School was completely burnt to the ground,” Was said.
He said the PEB needed to confirm reports that three more primary schools in Kompiam had also been burnt.
“This week, a few schools have resumed classes while most of them would make a fresh start on Monday,” he said.
He said by now news of the election-related violence that resulted in the destruction of educational facilities in Enga and other parts of the country had reached the Education Department.
