NEW teachers colleges that are being developed and yet to be registered should not enrol students, Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra says.
Dr Kombra said students who attended unregistered teachers colleges would not be registered as teachers.
He said the unregistered colleges were still in the development stage towards registration.
Dr Kombra said some unregistered teachers colleges included Gelu Teachers College, Jiwaka Teachers College, Kumul Teachers College, Kelua Teachers College and Carl Teachers College.
He said Kumul Teachers College had applied for registration but had not been approved.
Meanwhile, all higher education institutions in the country will be managed by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), according to secretary Fr Jan Czuba.
Dr Kombra said this meant all higher institutions, including teachers colleges, needed to be registered with DHERST.
Fr Jan said those institutions had to meet 10 standards for institutional registration and seven standards for programme accreditation.
“If those colleges were established by the Education Department, we will give them one year to apply for registration as a higher education institution,” he said.
“We will work with them to help them to meet our standards as institution of higher learning and accredit there programmes.”
Fr Jan said the programmes at teachers colleges were established and approved by the Government and had to be implemented.
He said this was to ensure quality of graduates and improving the education system.
Fr Jan said all recognised institutions were on the DHESRT website.
