POLICE Minister Bryan Kramer wants MPs to use funds from their district services improvement programme (DSIP) to support police operations in their electorates.
Kramer said initiatives to control law and order problems in communities would need the support of MPs.
“Some of our initiatives will need your commitment through your DSIP funds where there is a million kina allocated for law and order,” he said.
Tewai-Siassi MP Kobby Bomareo asked Kramer to tell Parliament about statistics in the police force.
“What is the total number of police personnel in the country?” he said. “What’s the latest status of police recruitment and training at Bomana Police College?
“How many police personnel do we have in each provinces?
“How many police do we have in districts in the country?”
Bomareo said a lot of districts were missing out on regular police presence.
“I am building 10 houses for police personnel and cellblocks in my district and I want to know if the minister (Kramer) can give me 10 police personnel,” he said.
Kramer said there were 7,383 police personnel in the country but would provide the specific figures for each province and district at a later time.
He said the police was not doing recruitment and training this year because of lack of adequate funding. “The biggest challenge we have in the police force is discipline issue,” he said.
“The concern now is whether the deployed officers to your electorate will be professional and competent.
“Some districts do not have enough infrastructure for officers to be deployed.”
Kramer thanked Bomareo and told him that he would be speaking to Police Comm David Manning to send 10 officers to his district soon.
