POLICE Minister Bryan Kramer has condemned the killing of a man in an ethnic clash in Port Moresby yesterday, and urged the people to work with police in restoring peace and order.
Atai Leana Vaburi from Wanigela died when knifed in front of shops at Koki at around 7pm on Sunday.
It later led to a confrontation between his relatives and the attackers from Hela.
Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko and the Wanigela people went to the police headquarters in Port Moresby asking for swift police intervention in arresting and charging people involved in Vaburi’s death.
Tkatchenko said the Wanigela people were peace-loving and God-fearing, with more than 4,000 living in a village set-up in the electorate.
Kramer said police would find out who were involved.
“This is a murder case so officers will be assigned and I will ask to be updated (regularly),” he said.
He said police depended on the people to give evidence as to what happened.
“If police don’t have evidence, (there is) no case,” he said.
“(The people) have to identify who was there and how the fight started, who was involved.”
He said the only way to stop such killings was to “remove trouble-makers in the community” because it was usually the same people who committed crimes.
Kramer said police presence at Koki would be maintained to ensure clashes between the factions there did not recur.

  • This is totally unacceptable! Why do people choose killing over peaceful settlement of disagreement or a problem? There are many ways to solve a problem without actually inflicting harm to anyone at all. People need to start to have regard for LIFE in their lives!

  • RE-INTRODUCE VAGRANCY ACT. REMOVE ALL SETTLEMENTS AND USE STATE LAND FOR DEVELOPMENT.

THIS IS PRIMITIVE, UNCIVILIZED WAY OF LIFE.

  • remove people who are sleeping in public places like 4mile, Boroko, waigani, town etc.. they are homeless and ones causing crime and creating problems.

  • Some people have run away from their villages and provinces from trouble fighting and have settled in other urban areas to cause chaos and disaster. Their own province is riddled with continuous killings and trouble fights.
Their Governor and MPs think its normal. There is no political will to restore peace and harmony in their province. If their communities are trouble free, there would be less rural urban drift resulting in overcrowding and popping up of unnecessary squatters and settlements. if their leaders seriously fund/take anti trouble fighting and firearm surrender activities head on, people would remain in their own communities and involve in agriculture and contribute meaningfully. The delay of PNG LNG project funds payments is a contributing factor of LO beneficeries waiting and increasing in number. More influx of people are migrating in the hope receiving their payments. What is wrong with leaders and MPs of their province??

  • Wainegelas are not part of Motu/Koita and so they must be regarded as settlers just like others from Tari, Goilala, Kerema, etc. Tchasinko thinks otherwise and continues to lick their ass and take them as peace-loving villagers. What a joke!

They should have accepted the fact that the woman’s phone that was stolen by a Goilala was retrieved by the Tari security guard and returned but yet they chose to confront the Tari guard. Now they go to their big daddy Tsasinkpo and cry “we are innocent”. Go back to the sea….that’s where you belong!

  • I travel twice a day during peak hours to work and back passing through Koki. There is always a snatcher there doing that especially to the most vulnerable, ladies. The Little police post next to the bustop is almost ineffective at all.
RPNGC top guns, get the cops out of the land cruisers and keep them on the ground! Koki is a thieves hub and this death and many more other petty crimes can be easily prevented!

  • Koki market was the best market of all times, I can still recall in 80s and early 90’s. I will go sit beside the fence and my mother will do the marketing. The best market ever. The wanigela are peace loving people full of smiles when selling their fish or sea foods caught in early hours of the morning.
