ABOUT 3,000 settlers residing at Nagada outside of Madang town are likely to be evicted, according to MP Bryan Kramer.
Kramer, who is also the Police Minister, said he met with Police Commissioner David Manning to discuss major police operations to be carried out in Madang in the coming months aimed at addressing law and order issues in the province.
“Four mobile units, two from Lae (MS 13) and two from Goroka (MS14) will be deployed to Madang in the second week of January to carry out a major two-month operation,” Kramer said on his Facebook page.
“I will be in Madang during the two months (January and February) operation to work with the Madang PPC to set up a command centre to overlook the deployment.
“Operations will also include carrying out a court order eviction of 3,000 people illegally residing at Nagada Plantation. On my last trip to Madang last week, Madang District Development Authority approved K100,000 funding to carry out the eviction.
“Police and district staff will also carry out a major social mapping exercise of all settlements and villages throughout Madang in an effort to flush out known criminals,” he said.
“Following the social mapping, each and every settlement will be administered under a community by-laws.
“Those in breach of the by-law, disturbing the peace, drunk and disorderly, petty criminals can expected to be evicted.
“Individuals who have been producing and selling homebrew as well as selling drugs (marijuana) to our youth will also be charged and later evicted from the province. “Any person(s) harbouring criminals can also expected to be arrested and charged and if residing in an illegal settlement will be subject to eviction.
“In 2019, most of my time was focused on bringing down a corrupt regime.
“In 2020, the focus will be in addressing the law and order issues around the country starting with Madang, before carrying out similar operations in other problematic districts like Alotau (Milne Bay), Porgera (Enga) and Kimbe (West New Britain).”
