JACOB Popuna from Western Highlands is the new public curator.

Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerenga Kua announced this yesterday, saying Popuna’s four-year appointment was based on merit.

Popuna was previously the principal legal officer of the public curator’s office.

Kua urged the new curator and his officers to perform honestly so that people would have trust in them and their office.

He told Popuna that the public curator’s office was a difficult office to administer because it dealt with and made decisions on behalf of people who had died without leaving any wills for their properties.

The attorney-general challenged the new public curator to work like Sir Mari Kapi, a former chief justice, whose decisions had never made disputing parties aggrieved because Sir Mari always gave opportunities to parties from the start of the process to the final decision.

Kua said Sir Mari had treated the process as important as the final decision and that was what he wanted his department, including the office of the public curator, to embrace and put into practice when

assuming their roles and responsibilities.
