POLICE Commissioner Tom Kulunga (pictured) has appealed to the people of Karkar Island in Madang to help catch suspects involved in the recent sexual assault of an expatriate female.

The victim was with two male companions, a Papua New Guinean and another expatriate, when they were attacked.

Police reported that belongings valued at more than K13,000 were stolen.

“This is a totally disgusting and unacceptable behaviour,” Kulunga said.

He condemned such actions in this day and age in a Christian country such as Papua New Guinea.

“I call upon the leaders and people of Karkar to take responsibility and bring those criminals to justice,” Kulunga said.

He said police reinforcements including officers from the Correctional Services were sent to Karkar Island to catch the suspects.

Police believed that one of the suspects was a recent prison escapee, Todd Mari, who was serving a period of 22 years for murder at the time of his escape at the Beon jail in Madang.

Meanwhile, Northern provincial police commander Victor Isouve has urged the people to work on the land to contain lawlessness in the country.

“Our people should work on their land to make their living,” he said.

He said cultivating land to grow cash crops and raising livestock could help people to earn an honest living in their communities.

“Our people should check government offices to get cocoa or palm oil seedlings to cultivate on their land,” Isouve said.

He said people owned land which they must utilise to earn their living.

“People should not think that jobs can be found only in the offices,” Isouve said.

Isouve appealed to Northern people to stop using marijuana and home-brew known as “eveka”.

“Our people must look after themselves,” he said.

Meanwhile, Isouve appealed to people crossing the Girua bridge to exercise caution.

He said a vehicle stolen yesterday had been found by Popondetta police.
