Kundiawa hosts two rugby league tourneys

KUNDIAWA town came alive over the weekend with two rugby league tournaments.
The Waghi Food Processors (WFP) Simbu Warriors Nines and the TNA Cup held matches attracting large crowds at Dickson rugby league ground.
Simbu Warriors Nines officials deferred their finals to Monday while the TNA Cup held its semifinals.
The SW nines tournament kicked off on Friday and ran for the past two days and with the final yesterday. According to the official results available yesterday afternoon in pool A Darkon Waiye is on nine points while Gumine Wisomo on six points; in pool B, Jay Masalai is on nine points and Tabare Brothers on five points.
In pool C, SNK Panthers is first with seven points and Mauko NDB Angras also on seven points while on the final pool D, Wotty Bulldogs led with eight points and Tongan Storms are second on seven points.
The top two sides from each pool advance to the quarterfinals.
The WFP Simbu Warriors Nines coordinator Paul Muglua thanked the 16 clubs that participated in the tournament.
He said the purpose of the nines tournament was to select a train-on squad and a development squad for the Simbu Warriors.
Muglua also thanked the respective sponsors of the teams particularly Kundiawa-based businessman Peter Iggy, who donated K5,000 to help organisers run the tournament.
Simbu Warrior board chairman Michael Robert said his board was aiming to return the province’s flagship team to the Digicel Cup this year.
He thanked Waghi Food Processors for its sponsorship.
