Kundiawa to have new fire station
By OLIVE SUKUN
CHIMBU capital Kundiawa will have a new fire station after the signing of an agreement between the Simbu government and the PNG Fire Service in Port Moresby yesterday.
Chimbu Governor Michael Dua, after signing the agreement with Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo, highlighted the need for change in Kundiawa.
“We really need a fire station in our province,” he said.
Dua said many shops in Kundiawa were built closely together, and if a fire started in one shop, the whole block could go up in flames.
Roo said the signing of the memorandum-of-understanding was a milestone for Chimbu and his department.
“The signing of the MOU is happening at the right time when the province has the best hospital in the country,” he said.
“The hospital has to be protected from any possible fire disasters.”
Roo said businesses, State institutions and churches in Kundiawa needed to be protected from fire.
Veteran fire officer Simon Kiom has been appointed to take charge of Kundiawa Fire Station.
He said he was happy with his appointment and was looking forward to setting up the fire service there.
