LEADERS are blessed by God to look after and lead people by example, a councillor who has returned unopposed for the fourth time says.

Enga businessman and ward councillor Paul Kurai retained his seat to lead his Kamanowan people for a fourth term.

He said leadership had been in the family for more than 70 years and was a blessing from God to lead his people.

He said his late father, Joseph Kurai Tapus, was the pioneer councillor and led his people for 40 years. He took over from his father in 1986 and challenged Governor Peter Ipatas in the contest for president but lost by two votes.

However, he said he had served as ward councillor for the past 27 years and would serve another term as ward councillor to complete 32 years.

“My family has led the community for the past 70 years. Leadership is blessed by God to look after the people. I thank God for that because He has blessed us to lead and serve the people.

“It does not matter whether we lead our people in a big or small way, we still serve the common purpose and that is to serve the people by becoming a ward councillor at the LLG,” he said.

Kurai was the president of the National Alliance Party branch in Enga for 10 years.

It won four seats in the eighth  parliament.
