Kwa: Betel nut ban to test attitude of chewers
The National, Tuesday September 17th, 2013
THE proposed ban on betel nut in Port Moresby will test the attitude of those who chew it, according to Constitutional and Law Reform Commission secretary Dr Eric Kwa.
He told staff last Friday during a luncheon that the ban on betel nut would determine if Papua New Guineans could change their attitude towards chewing it.
He challenged the staff to start, from today, with a desire to change the future of the country by learning from the mistakes of the past 38 years.
His deputy Isaiah Chillion said the commission had established itself in the government’s structure and its functions were appreciated by all government institutions.
He said this had been evident since its inception in 2006 with many terms of reference by Justice ministers to review laws and the direction by the head of state to review the organic law on provincial and local level governments this year.
Chillion said the processes and procedures had been laid down and the CLRC would now fully exercise its powers.
Kwa said the Commission hoped to have full staff strength by the beginning of next year.
