KWIKILA Secondary School dominated the field and track events with 13 gold which helped to claim Central’s inter-school carnival title in Port Moresby last week.
Kwikila also collected four gold in the ball games of touch, volleyball, netball and soccer, bringing their gold total to 17 at Sir John Guise Stadium.
Reigning champions Iarowari Agro Technical Secondary School finished as runners-up with 12 gold.
Athletics coordinator Nick Maino told The National last Friday that Kwikila successes in the track events, including the sprints, ensured their crowning as champions.
“For the boys, Kwikila’s Emmanuel Mamei won the 100m final with a time of 11.41 seconds,” he said. “Mamei and fellow Kwikila student Helen Aisa won the 200m finals.
“George Kiama added another gold for Kwikila in the 400m.
“A female Kwikila student also won the 1,500m.
“Kwikila continued their reign in the 4×400 and 4×100 male and female finals.” Kwikila were among six schools that competed in the carnival.
Maino said the next carnival would be held in 2024. “We hold the carnival every two years, so we’re planning to host a bigger one next time,” he said.
“The alternative year is 2023, but we’ll run it in our own schools.”
Maino said Kwikila athletes would return to school after the term break and prepare for the national championships.
“Some Athletics Papua New Guinea personnel who were coordinating the track and field events, have talked highly about the Kwikila athletes,” he said.
“So I’m going to bring these athletes to the national championships.
“Kwikila runners are capable of entering the national scene.
“They’ve got very good runners who can reach the top level.”
Meanwhile, Maino thanked the provincial administration for funding the carnival.
“Thanks to the Central administration for supporting the event and ensuring that students compete in such sporting activities,” he said.
